This is also the theme of the ceremony \u2013 Be yourself, But be your best self.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hello Mr. Duong Anh Duc, Vice Chairman of HCMC People Committee, Mr Hoang Quoc Viet &#8211; Chairman of Nguyen Hoang Group, President VO THI NGOC THUY, Hoa Sen Faculty members, Distinguished Guests, Students &amp; Parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xin Chao!<strong>&nbsp; <\/strong>It\u2019s my great honour to join you today for the Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year at Hoa Sen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little bit about myself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Originally from New Zealand &#8211; I have been living in Vietnam for 10 years now<\/li><li>I don\u2019t speak Vietnamese, but I have recorded a Vietnamese song by Trinh Cong Son!<\/li><li>My wife is a leading voice on women leadership in Vietnam<\/li><li>My son is a fluent Vietnamese speaker<\/li><li>I trained as a lawyer.\u00a0 My first career was as a Diplomat.\u00a0 Now I am managing director of an international consulting business.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How many of you know what a Diplomat does?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Diplomat represents their country internationally.\u00a0 Supporting businesses, trade, building relationships with government and people in the country where they are working, promoting cultural understanding, supporting peace and security.\u00a0\u00a0I did this for 20 years, in many parts of the world from India to China to Brazil and finally in Vietnam.\u00a0 It was an amazing and privileged career. At first, I thought I would study accounting.\u00a0 Then I studied Japanese.\u00a0 Then I gave that up and studied law instead. It was only after about 4 years at university that I started to think \u201chey, being a Diplomat could be interesting!\u201d. So, my <strong>first<\/strong> <strong>reflection<\/strong> to you today is this:\u00a0 it\u2019s ok if you haven\u2019t yet decided what comes next after university \u2013 what your first job might be.\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t rush into a decision<\/strong> \u2013 you have time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>second<\/strong> <strong>reflection<\/strong> I wish to share with you is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you get older, it is easy to get swept along by everything going on around you. \u00a0The pace of life seems to be speeding up year by year. As you gain power and influence, it is easy to be distracted by things like status and money. To me, this means three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Be humble.&nbsp; Always treat people with respect.&nbsp; Treat people the way you yourself would like to be treated.<\/li><li>Be open and be curious.&nbsp; Always keep learning.&nbsp;&nbsp; Never assume you know everything \u2013 you don\u2019t!<\/li><li>Act with purpose.&nbsp; Think about how what you do contributes to the community you live in.&nbsp;&nbsp; We all go through this life together.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>third and final reflection<\/strong> I want to offer is to <strong>appreciate the good things<\/strong> in life: your friends, family, a good conversation, nature.\u00a0The author James Clear \u2013 who is an excellent modern thinker &#8211; puts it this way: <em>\u201cFor those who expect everything, there are many curses.<\/em> <em>For those who appreciate everything, there are many blessings\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear Students, it is such an exciting time to be a young Vietnamese \u2013 and to be a new university student.\u00a0\u00a0Trust me: These days there is a lot of international attention and excitement about Vietnam so you will have many opportunities in the coming years \u2013 not just here in Vietnam but also around the world.
