“PORTAL”<\/span><\/div>\n

The exhibition PORTAL will showcase Saeko\u2019s SPECIMEN Series and two larger-size artworks, \u201cOsmosis\u201d and \u201cPhotosynthesis\u201d. These represent a contemporary and highly unique approach to using Son Ta – Vietnam’s natural lacquer, which has long been considered a “traditional” material in Vietnam. Saeko Ando boldly replaced the typical lacquered wood panels, the conventional substrates for lacquer painting, with acrylic panels to allow light to penetrate through the layers of natural lacquer. By showcasing Son Ta’s unique characteristics, Saeko has transformed it into a futuristic medium. <\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Saeko Ando’s lacquer artworks on acrylic have astonished audiences, including fellow artists and lacquer experts at international exhibitions and art shows in London (Asian Art in London, 2018, 2022), Munster (Lacquer Friends of the World, 2018), Shanghai (Asian Lacquer Craft Exchange Research Project, 2019), Dai Lai (Art in the Forest, 2019) and Tokyo (Urushi Forms and Hope, 2022).<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
In the Arts and Crafts industry, Son Ta has been considered inferior to natural lacquers from other countries like Japan and China. With a profound understanding of this material and how to harness its unusual qualities, Saeko has effectively proven the opposite.<\/span><\/div>\n

Her success suggests great potential for this traditional material in modern times. Saeko reminds us that true art is about reinvention, which happens when artists explore, experiment and challenge themselves.<\/span><\/div>\n

The PORTAL exhibition marks the first time that such a large collection of Saeko Ando\u2019s lacquer artworks on acrylic are displayed together. To create such extraordinary artworks with natural lacquer is extremely time-consuming. Saeko produces very few pieces each year. She has only shown small numbers of works at previous exhibitions, making this event special.<\/span><\/div>\n

Eight years after starting this series of Son Ta artworks on acrylic bases, Saeko Ando feels ready to unveil them. She chose Vietnam as the place for this meaningful exhibition to thank the country she calls her “second home”.<\/span><\/div>\n
