Abstract: As second language teachers, we often think teaching grammar is necessary and we tend to overlook the crucial need for meaningful exposure in language learning. With the help of one particular study (Hong, 2005), I will show that even the best type of explicit grammar instruction to teach the use of articles in English did not result in the desired effect at all. Colloquium No.5, held on Dec 17, 2015 Topic: “Phenomenography: A Qualitative research approach to investigating different understandings of reality” Presenter: Dr. Dang Thi Ngoc Lan – from Vietnamese-German University Abstract: In this presentation, phenomenography, a new qualitative research approach which was developed by a research group in the Department of Education, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1981, will be introduced. Aims and examples of phenomenographic research will be given. Then, its similarities and differences from phenomenology will be elaborated, and its methods and data analysis will be presented. Finally, some criticisms of this approach will be brought into discussion.
