BOOKTALK 2018 * FINAL ROUND
BOOKTALK 2018 * FINAL ROUND
June 14th, 2018 – This contest was held for English-majored students of cohorts 2015, 2016 and 2017. Although participation was far from expectation, the playing ground proved to be fruitful and very encouraging.
In order to be able to perform well, students had to choose their favorite graded readers, read them carefully, wrote a book review of at least 600 words, drafted their speech plans and finally delivered them (05-10 minutes in length).
Some got stuck when their mind went blank. Some struggled with their use of vocabulary. Some managed to spell out their messages. Some invented new words which language experts in the world might feel proud of. But above all, they read between the lines and comprehended English. All demonstrated that they could reflect and express values of humanity, empathy, social problems, technological problems, human rights, racial discrimination (or segregation), etc. Wonderful!
Ha Thuc Yen Thy won the first prize (2 million VND) on ‘The Price of Love’ by Nikola T. James. Two runner-ups were Nguyen Dinh Quoc Anh (on ‘Do androids dream of electric sheep?’ by Philip K. Dick) and Luong Minh Ngoc (on ‘I, Robot’ by Issac Asimov). Each pocketed 1 million VND in prize money. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thao (on ‘A Little Princess’ by Fraces Eliza Hodgson Burnett) and Nguyen Hung Duy (on ‘Martin Luther King’ by Alan C. McLean) each got the third prize of 500,000VND.
It’s promising that next year’s event might be even better.
Thank you, participants, and audiences (sometimes over-enthusiastic!)
