In the first session (9:00-10:30), Ms. Bien Thi Thanh Mai from FLCS, Hoa Sen University and her student will present their recent research “A Case Study of Writing Center in Vietnam”. This topic would be interesting for many of us, especially ones who want to help their students improve their writing skills.

Abstract:

In universities, although many students find writing skills the most challenging, different forms of feedback supporting sources within the classroom are limited. To better enhance students’ writing skills, the Writing Center, in which expert tutors provide individual consultations and feedback to students’ papers, was established at Hoa Sen University. This study aims to find out to what extent students find the Writing Center beneficial to their writing development. Questionnaire for 241 students and in-depth interviews with 5 tutors and 12 students were utilized to investigate the practices at the Writing Center as well as students’ perceptions and attitude of its services. The results show that most students perceive the benefits of and have positive views about the Writing Center services, which implies a potential for the Writing Center to be widely applied as a supporting source for students’ writing abilities. Some aspects which a Writing Center in the Vietnamese context should be taken into consideration are also revealed.
