Information from Hoa Sen University (HSU) revealed that the university has just received the AUN-QA assessment results for two programs: English Language Studies and Hotel Management. Accordingly, both programs are officially recognized as meeting the AUN-QA standards.

Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam, Head of the Office of Testing – Quality Assurance at HSU, stated: “This assessment has provided an opportunity for HSU in general, and the English Language Studies and Hotel Management programs in particular, to compare their academic quality with international standards and to truly integrate into the ASEAN university quality assurance culture. This also serves as an opportunity for HSU to reaffirm its reputation to stakeholders, bringing benefits to the university and its students.”

Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam also mentioned that the English Language Studies and Hotel Management programs were assessed by the AUN-QA assessor team as “Better Than Adequate” at some criteria, equivalent to a level 5/7 on the AUN-QA assessment scale, particularly the criteria on program specification of Hotel Management; and the criteria on program specification and teaching and learning approach of the English Language Studies program.

With these results as a motivational boost and a stepping stone, the university plans to improve quality further, laying the foundation for subsequent program assessments to develop a roadmap for academic programs towards international standards.

Previously, from April 2 to 4, 2019, at the Nguyen Van Trang headquarters and the Quang Trung 2 campus of Hoa Sen University, an AUN-QA team led by Dr. Wyona C.Patalinghug – the Acting Vice President of the AUN-QA Council, along with experts, officially assessed the two programs of English Language Studies and Hotel Management at Hoa Sen University.

In 2016, HSU was admitted as an associate member of AUN-QA and aimed to assess its programs according to this set of standards. In 2017, HSU planned to conduct a self-assessment according to the 11 criteria of the AUN-QA and registered for an official program assessment with AUN-QA in August 2017 for its Hotel Management and English Language Studies programs.

From September 2018 to February 2019, the programs conducted internal assessment activities for the English Language Studies and Hotel Management programs.

The internal assessment team carried out surveys and assessment activities according to the official AUN-QA assessment process, including listening to reports from the programs, studying evidence documents, interviewing relevant stakeholders (including faculty leaders, self-assessment team, program’s lecturers, students, support staff, alumni, businesses), and conducting campus observations at the main headquarters like the official program assessment process according to the AUN-QA standards.

*The AUN-QA standards, established in 2004 by the ASEAN University Network, aim to promote the quality assurance process at universities in the region and facilitate credit transfer among programs that meet the standards within the network. The AUN-QA standards include 11 criteria covering expected learning outcomes, program specification, program structure and content, teaching and learning approach, student assessment, academic staff quality, support staff quality, student quality and support, facilities and infrastructure, quality enhancement, and outputs.
